End of an Era? Ashwin Poised to Leave Chennai Super Kings

Speculation is mounting that Ravichandran Ashwin, a prominent figure in Indian cricket, and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are heading towards a separation.

While there's no official confirmation yet, recent developments within the CSK camp suggest that the veteran off-spinner, celebrated for his match-winning performances in Test cricket, is likely to sever ties with the Super Kings franchise.

The precise reason for this impending split remains unclear. However, sources indicate that Ashwin has made his decision and communicated it to the franchise.

It's unknown whether Ashwin received insights into CSK's future strategies. As previously reported, key CSK officials and players, including current captain Ruturaj Gaikwad and former skipper MS Dhoni, have been in Chennai for meetings, likely discussing plans for the upcoming season.

Further fueling separation rumors, the veteran spinner is expected to resign from his position as Director of Operations at the CSK Academy, a role he has held for the past year. Should he join another franchise, maintaining his CSK Academy position could create a conflict of interest, something he's reportedly eager to avoid.

With a record of 187 wickets in 221 matches, an economy rate of 7.29, and 833 runs at a strike rate of 118, Ashwin is sure to attract interest in the IPL circuit. The question remains whether he'll be traded to another franchise or enter the auction. He participated in nine games for CSK last season.

CSK acquired Ashwin for INR 9.75 crore, marking his return to the franchise after nine years. From 2016 to 2024, he represented Delhi Capitals, Punjab Kings, and Rajasthan Royals. Ashwin's IPL journey began with CSK, where he spent his first eight seasons (2008-2015) under MS Dhoni's leadership, debuting in 2009.

This development follows reports that Sanju Samson has requested a release from the Rajasthan Royals franchise.

Cricbuzz has reached out to CSK officials for comments. Ashwin was unavailable.
