Following Najmul Hossain Shanto's departure from the captaincy after disagreements with the board concerning his removal as ODI captain, speculation has been rife regarding potential replacements to lead the Test side.

While Shanto holds the highest winning percentage as captain at 28.57% (4 wins, 1 draw, and 9 losses in 14 Tests), surpassing Shakib al Hasan (21.05%) and Mushfiqur Rahim (20.58%), the BCB appears to be considering alternative leadership options.

There's consideration for Mehidy Hasan, the newly appointed ODI captain, to take over the Test team as well. However, sources suggest the BCB prefers separate captains for different formats.

Taijul Islam emerges as a viable candidate due to his consistent presence in the Test playing XI and extensive experience.

"I believe it's crucial to empower the captain and value his input. Team performance flourishes when there's faith in the leader," Taijul remarked to Cricbuzz. "With my experience, I'm confident in my ability to lead the team effectively. I'm not driven by personal ambition for the captaincy, but if offered, I'm ready to step up."

He further elaborated, "It's not about the allure of the role. A captain should possess a clear vision for the team's future, setting goals for the next two years. The team management must align with this vision when considering leadership options."

When asked about the prospect of captaining, he simply stated, "If the opportunity comes, why not?"

Since the 2021 Sri Lanka series, Taijul has demonstrated improved economy in his bowling, maintaining tighter control even in overseas conditions, a departure from his earlier, more expensive spells.

Taijul acknowledges that his improved pace variations are enhancing his effectiveness and attributes this to a deeper understanding of his game.

"Several factors contribute to this improvement. Age and experience play significant roles," Taijul explained. "With age, you gain better control over your deliveries. Playing more Tests, especially overseas, provides invaluable experience on different pitches. This accumulated experience translates into better performance. It's challenging for newcomers to excel immediately; they need time to develop. I'm grateful for the time I've been given to improve steadily."

He concluded, "Pace variation is crucial. Mixing slower and quicker deliveries can confuse batsmen. Bowling two balls at the same pace, one turning and the other going straight, poses a significant challenge. The world's best spinners employ this technique, making it incredibly difficult for batsmen to predict the ball's trajectory."
