Jamie Overton, the fast-bowling all-rounder, has received a call-up to England's squad for the fifth and final Test against India. The England and Wales Cricket Board made the announcement on Monday, confirming Overton's inclusion in the 15-man squad.
Jamie Overton last played a Test match in June 2022.
Overton's inclusion brings the number of frontline pace bowlers in the squad to six. He joins a seam attack already featuring Jofra Archer, Chris Woakes, Josh Tongue, Gus Atkinson, and Brydon Carse. The decision to add Overton comes after England captain Ben Stokes acknowledged the need for fresh players heading into the final Test. Stokes himself has appeared uncomfortable at times on the field, while Woakes has played in all four Tests despite nursing an ankle injury. Archer, who recently returned to the Test side after a four-year absence, has played in the last two matches.
Overton has only one Test appearance to his name, which came three years ago against New Zealand. The fifth Test match is scheduled to commence on July 31st at The Oval. England currently holds a 2-1 lead in the series following a draw in the fourth Test at Old Trafford on Sunday.
England Squad for the Fifth Test:
Ben Stokes (Captain), Jofra Archer, Gus Atkinson, Jacob Bethell, Harry Brook, Brydon Carse, Zak Crawley, Liam Dawson, Ben Duckett, Jamie Overton, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Jamie Smith, Josh Tongue, Chris Woakes
