Patrick Moroney has been appointed to the position of "convenor selector for the Proteas men's team," effective August 1. The move comes as the CSA board seemingly reverts to older selection methods, but Moroney's appointment is seen as a positive step.
Cricbuzz has confirmed that Moroney's position is full-time, with a three-year contract. He will report to Enoch Nkwe, CSA's director of national teams and high performance, and work closely with head coach Shukri Conrad. This collaboration is viewed favorably, given Nkwe's meticulous approach and Conrad's proven competence.
Moroney's experience spans various levels of South African cricket. He has served as a high school director of sport and marketing, contributed to talent identification programs, and convened selectors for the Lions, as well as CSA's academy, emerging, and under-19 teams.
Nkwe emphasized Moroney's extensive knowledge and selection experience, stating that it makes him "the ideal person for the job."
Moroney previously served on the national men's selection panel before it was disbanded in January 2023. Since then, head coaches have had sole responsibility for team selection.
Notably, South Africa's recent successes, such as reaching the 2024 T20I World Cup final and their strong showing in the World Test Championship (WTC), occurred when head coaches Rob Walter and Shukri Conrad had primary control over team selection. This raises questions about the rationale behind reinstating a selection panel.
The decision to revert to a selection panel raises concerns about the CSA board's understanding of what leads to success. There's a perception that certain members may be undermining efficiency and progress.
Despite the concerns, Moroney's appointment is seen as a positive development. He is regarded as someone who is committed to the well-being of South African cricket, working alongside figures like Nkwe, Conrad, and Khoza.
Cricbuzz has also confirmed that an independent selector will be appointed, forming a three-person panel with Moroney and Conrad. The quality of this appointment remains to be seen.
